GRASAG PRESIDENT JOINS POLICY DIALOGUE ON EXPANDING PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

The President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), H.E Emmanuel Owusu, participated in a high-profile policy dialogue on the theme “Expanding Public Universities – Effect on Access, Quality and Sustainability,” hosted by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS). The event took place on March 19, 2024 at the Kwame Nkrumah Auditorium, GAAS, in Accra, and was part of the Academy’s ongoing project, “Motivating Higher Education Reforms in Ghana – Towards Equity and Sustainability.”

Mr. Owusu was invited to contribute to a 30-minute panel discussion, bringing his insights and perspectives on the critical issues surrounding the expansion of public universities in Ghana. His participation underscored GRASAG’s commitment to influencing higher education policies and ensuring the interests of graduate students are represented in national dialogues.

During the discussion, Mr. Owusu highlighted the challenges and opportunities that come with expanding public universities, emphasizing the need to balance increased access with maintaining high educational standards and sustainability. He also addressed the potential impacts on graduate students, advocating for policies that ensure quality education and equitable opportunities for all.

The dialogue attracted a diverse audience, including academics, policymakers, and stakeholders in the education sector. The event aimed to explore and propose reforms that would promote equity and sustainability in Ghana’s higher education system.

In his remarks, Mr. Owusu stressed the importance of strategic planning and investment in infrastructure, faculty development, and research facilities to support the growth of public universities. He called for collaborative efforts between the government, educational institutions, and private sector to achieve these goals.

The GAAS event provided a platform for robust discussions and the exchange of ideas on enhancing the quality and sustainability of higher education in Ghana.
